A good way to do that is to take up a mercenary contract with the faction you like instead of becoming a lord directly. You'll be able to fight their enemies, increase your renown and also your relations with them. That last part is pretty important because when you do become a vassal, you'll need the support from other lords to be granted fiefs.

It isn’t a bug, more of a missing feature. I believe that it’s critical for players who intend to startup their own kingdom one day to be able to leave a mercenary contract through expiration, and I would hope that TW is planning on adding it but for the time being the only solid way to make money is raid hideouts and get workshops.

First - In the early game, stay the fuck away from troops who are not brigands and their variations if you don't have any companions. They are either mounted and will fuck you up or they have ranged weapons and they will 2 shot you easy. So focus on fighting parties of brigands, usually near Laria or Sarleon.

It depends on some factors like if the king of that faction is rich so he can afford to pay you a lot, or if that faction is at war with strong enemies. Today's patch, which is the beta version, makes it so that the merc payment is updated every 30 days. Before the amount you are assigned at the start was permanent unless you leave the kingdom.

But, if you go talk to the ruler and ask to leave you'll still lose the rep, guessing it's a bug #1

So right here you have a few more reasons: because they think its fun; because they want to RP as a mercenary; because they dont want to take orders from a king; because they dont want to be tied down by a faction; and so on. mercenaries is a decent paid job. Just sell your loot or gather influence (extra pay).
Mercenary contracts should probably: Expire after a set period of time, allowing you to renew or leave without suffering relationship penalties. Not penalize you for breaking the contract early as though you swore and then broke vassalage.
